Bushfire survivor, Turia Pitt, wins NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year award.  The mining engineer suffered burns to 60 per cent of her body after being caught in a bushfire while competing in an ultra-marathon in Western Australia in 2011. Her rehabilitation included learning to walk again.

She has turned this near-tragic turn in her life into a crusade to help others and is currently organising an event for Interplast to raise funds for reconstructive surgery for people in developing countries. Hosted by Emma Freedman from The Today Show with guests of honour, Sara and Glenn McGrath, it will be held on May 15 at Doltone House, Sydney.  There is an impressive list of door prizes too including a Queenstown Escape package and diamond, pearls and opal jewellery.
