The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released the latest Australian disability statistics. The number of people with disability sits at 4.2 million which represents 18.5 per cent of the population. 1.4 million, (6 per cent) have a profound disability.

For the year 2012-13 the number of people receiving disability services reached 312,500 while 136,300 of those using disability support services had an informal carer, an increase of nearly 25 per cent since 2008-09. Around $7.2 billion was spent by governments on disability support services, representing an increase adjusted for inflation of 23 per cent, since 2008-09.
