Spinal Cord Injuries Australia’s employment service, EmployAbility, helps people with physical disability to lead more independent and inclusive lives by supporting them to aspire to, prepare for and engage in meaningful employment.

EmployAbility is not just an employment service supporting job seekers with their resume, interview skills and finding them a job with a disability inclusive employer. It also offers the option to complete an online job skills training program, which has been specifically developed for people with physical disability who might need a bit more support on their journey to work.

What makes the service unique is that when a job seeker signs up with EmployAbility they are matched with one of its employment coaches, who have lived experience of physical disability. They have been on the employment search journey and can share their experiences to help job seekers build confidence and ensure that they are better equipped to face any challenge that comes their way.

The best thing about the EmployAbility program is that it’s FREE!

Damien’s story

Damien ran a bakery for 10 years before a workplace injury resulted in a spinal cord injury and limited use of his left arm. He found it difficult to return to work and spent two months in the EmployAbility program focused on building confidence, sharpening his job search skills and identifying his transferable skills as he cannot return to manual work.

“Whilst completing the EmployAbility program I was fortunate enough with the help of the EmployAbility team to secure the perfect employment with a great employer, who looks past your disability and has a great team of people,” Damien said. “Despite being employed already I chose to continue to complete the program, as I found it still had useful information as the job market is always changing. I cannot thank the EmployAbility team enough.”

If you know of anyone with physical disability, who is looking for work, or has a job but is looking for something more, EmployAbility could be just what they’re looking for to support them on their job search journey.
