Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.
On this week’s episode, interviewer Bethany Cody caught up with Brittnee Watson to chat about the experiences of getting tattoos as somebody who is blind or has low vision.
As a very visual medium, Bethany and Brittnee discuss the discrimination and misconceptions people who are blind or have low vision face when it comes to getting tattoos.
“I had anxiety about, ‘are they really going to care because they know I’m not going to be able to see it’, but it happened to be that the tattoo artist’s mum had low vision as well, and had pretty much the same conditions I had, so she made me feel so comfortable,” Brittnee said.

While a tattoo might seem a daunting experience, Brittnee said it’s not something that should be off limits to people with a disability.
“Don’t be afraid to discuss your disability, whether you’re blind, in a wheelchair, whether you’re deaf, whether you have any sort of other ability out there, you can still get a tattoo. It is very accessible,” she said.
