Family Advocacy is running seminars in Sydney on Restrictive Practices and Medical Safeguarding.  The Restrictive Practices seminar will be relevant to those involved within Human Services wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the implications these practices can have on people with disability. Topics for discussion include the different types of restrictive practices and the common risks associated with these; misconceptions in the use of restrictive practices, the personal and social costs and proposed guidelines on how to approach the issue of restraint use. This seminar is being presented by Dr Marc Tumeinski who has evaluated a variety of human services programs in North America and is working to bring an end to the use of restrictive practices, such as restraint.

The second seminar, Medical Safeguarding, is for medical staff and professionals wanting to protect and support people with disability within medical settings.  Topics include clinical and administrative complexities, personnel attitudes and what makes hospitals and other settings dangerous. It will provide strategies around the core issues for people going into medical settings, consulting with GPs and medical professionals and protective measures that can be put in place. It will be presented by Jo Massarelli, a consultant with an interest in advocacy in hospitals.

The Restrictive Practices seminar will be held on Friday June 30 and the Medical Safeguarding seminar on Saturday July 1, both at the Novotel Parramatta.
