Last month, Second Echo Ensemble’s (SEE) The Adventures of Peacock, Chicken and the
Pony They Rode Upon reached a thrilling milestone: a collaborative performance, with
Sydney company Midnight Feast, at the iconic Sydney Opera House.
This moment realises three years of devising and designing, travelling between states, writing songs and learning lines. The cast brought their imaginative, playful world to life for an enthusiastic audience, blending puppetry, original music, dance and theatre in a production for all ages.
For Dave Montgomery, a core member of SEE, visual dramaturg and actor in the production, the moment was deeply moving.
“I am feeling a bit teary when I come off the stage because it is my happiness. I feel to be like a director – it is awesomeness and I am so very proud. I really wanted to say thank you to Digby, Oliver, Suzy and Paul – all the Midnight Feast and including all of the Second Echo – Annalise, Cary, Nicole, Alex, Elise, Jason and of course Kelly. I have been with SEE for 20 years and I am part of it – yes I am,” Montgomery said.
For SEE member Annalise, the audience’s energy made the performance unforgettable.
“I was speechless. The audience made me feel loads of pressure but they were clapping in rhythm. I think they would give over 10,000 points. Now I really know all the show, all my exits, the quick changes I feel super powerful. I think it is a fun, creative show by super creative artists sharing dancing, singing and acting for all generations. Expressing our personality and our awesome ability.”
The Sydney Opera House performances were certainly a celebration of creativity, collaboration and joy. After their Sydney performances, SEE and Midnight Feast are now preparing for the Hobart season at the Theatre Royal, running from 26–30 September as part of the Staycation program.
There will also be creative workshops available facilitated by Montgomery and the SEE team.
Audiences can expect the same vibrant creativity, playful storytelling, and heartwarming performances that made the Opera House show a memorable milestone.
