A Specialist Disability Housing facility for people with profound disability has opened at Wanguri, Darwin.

Speaking at the opening NDIS Minister Bill Shorten said the cooperative between the Federal and Northern Territory Governments represents a $1.2 million investment with Carpentaria Services to provide safe, quality housing for Territorians who have special needs.

The Federal Government invests approximately $600 million in individual supports for about 6000 Territorians who are on the NDIS.

NT Disabilities Minister Ngaree Ah Kit said: “It’s important my government continues to partner with providers to make sure that land becomes available. As well as the two builds in Darwin that are opening today, Carpentaria are in the design phase of a SDA home in Alice Springs and have been successful in two more land grants.”

Shorten also announced that the government will pilot alternative commissioning for people who are eligible for the NDIS living in remote communities. One of the two proposed NDIS co-participants trials sites will open at Maningrida, in the Arnhem Land region. These will be driven by the community in conjunction with the Territory Government, he said.
