Improving outcomes for people with disability in New Zealand needs a proactive and a collaborative approach, according to a new report.

The report set out to question existing assumptions, identify emerging trends, and explore alternative future scenarios, particularly when it comes to disability and sport.

Sport NZ partnered with Paralympics New Zealand, Special Olympics New Zealand and the Halberg Foundation to better understand the challenges faced.

The latest data shows that one in six New Zealanders experience disability and are less active than their non-disabled peers.

Through surveys, workshops and expert consultations a strategic process will focus on a five to 10-year outlook, with the aim of addressing disparities in health, wellbeing and  quality-of-life outcomes experienced by people with disability.

This collaborative effort is intended to improved access to quality sport and recreation experiences, potentially impacting educational outcomes, future employment prospects and overall life trajectories.
