The PBS has been expanded with 50 new medicines and procedures now subsidised by the government. Among the new drugs that will be cheaper under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is Denosumab (Prolia). This treatment for osteoporosis, previously only available to women, has been extended to around 5700 men.

About 230,000 patients are expected to benefit from the new listings for a range of conditions that include Type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and malignant melanoma.

The amendments also include a change to the pricing scheme of some PBS medicines.
