June is Radiothon time for Vision Australia Radio and its asking listeners, and the broader community for support to continue its essential service.

The Radiothon is intended to highlight the vitality and scope of the radio network and help people understand the benefits it supplies to the blind and low vision community and those with a print disability.

This month, alongside regular presenters, there will be interviews and testimonials from special guests reiterating this message, and the number of ways to support Radiothon.

The network offers a range of programs that feature readings from the latest newspapers, magazines and books. It keeps people connected, informed and entertained on topics they care about that mainstream media doesn’t regularly cover.

The exclusive specialist content includes programs on new technology, current affairs, book and film reviews, health and wellbeing, the arts, finance, travel and more.

While it operates with a workforce of 500 volunteers and a handful of dedicated staff it still runs at a deficit each year, largely due to broadcasting and transmission costs and limited government funding.

There are a number of ways to lend support:

  • Make a tax-deductible donation of $2 or more before June 30.
  • Follow Vision Australia Radio on Facebook and Twitter and share its positive radiothon messages with #BeAGoodListener
  • Encourage followers, friends and family to consider supporting its service.
  • If you would like to help in any way email radiothon coordinator Jason Gipps on: radio@visionaustralia.org
