On Sunday, 1 June 2025, Para and Ability Dance WA hosted the 2025 Perth Para Dance Sport Competition at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka.

Sponsored by the City of Stirling, the event showcased an outstanding display of athleticism, expression, and community spirit, featuring Para Dance and Vision Impaired dancer competitors, as well as captivating demonstrations from All Abilities.

The atmosphere was electric, with both dancers and spectators sharing in the celebration of inclusive dance.

“I was challenged, inspired and motivated,” said para dancer Danielle Stitfall, capturing the spirit of the day echoed by many.

The competition ran seamlessly under the guidance of Darryl Davenport, founder of Para and Ability Dance WA. Earlier this year, Darryl Davenport was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his outstanding service to people with disability through dance.

A highlight of the event was the performance of international guest competitor Choi Moon Jung from South Korea. Her vibrant and dynamic routines left audiences captivated.

“I found myself wanting to stop mid-dance just to watch and learn from her,” Danielle said.

Local competitor Mary Halacas radiated joy as she took to the floor with partner Daniel Di Giovanni.

“I immensely enjoyed performing in front of people and making them happy,” Mary said.

Having danced for just under a year, she’s made tremendous progress both as a soloist and in partnership.

“Dancing has enriched my life in many ways—giving me joy and confidence, improving my health through regular exercise. It helps me manage my stress and allows me to express myself in a healthy way.”

Two special awards were presented on the day: the Sam Hall Trophy for the Heart of Dance and the Hillary Weeks Trophy for Outstanding Performance. These awards honour two para dancers who sadly passed away, and stand as a tribute to their legacy and the vibrant community they helped shape. Choi Moon Jung was awarded the Hillary Weeks Trophy, and All Abilities dancer Anna Gray received the Sam Hall Trophy.

The event was more than a competition—it was a reflection of a strong, inclusive, and nurturing community.

“I was thrilled with the competition,” said Darryl. “All competitors continue to improve with every performance. I am very proud of the competitors, coaches and partners.”

Danielle Stitfall and her partner James Bardill have recently returned from an international competition in Hong Kong, where they achieved personal bests in all categories. “There was already an air of excitement when we arrived, and the energy just built into a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere,” Danielle said.

The 2025 Perth Para Dance Sport Competition is yet another example of the opportunities he continues to create for dancers across WA to express themselves, grow, and connect with others through their shared love of dance.

Thank you to all the volunteers, dancers and supporters who made the event such a resounding success. And thank you to the City of Stirling for sponsoring the competition and for their continued support of Para and Ability Dance WA.
